Benefits of Massage for Pain Management

  • Decrease of inflammation which will help decrease muscle soreness.  The pain-causing physical expressions of chronic inflammation consist of mild swelling of the soft tissue, tension in the fascia, pathological hypertonus of muscles, significant decrease in blood supply and calcium depositing in the soft tissue.
  • Decrease in tension in the skeletal muscles.  The more tension that builds in the skeletal muscles, the more tension in the fascia and other soft tissues of the body.  This tension causes a decrease in the elasticity of the tissues and it starts to affect the circulation of blood and oxygen throughout the body.  Which, in turn, causes even greater stiffness and pain.
  • Increase in levels of serotonin-a neurotransmitter to the brain which helps mediate basic body functions such as smooth muscle contraction.  It is also responsible for our wakeful state and excitement.  Patients with clinical depression often show signs of decreased serotonin levels.
  • Decrease in insomnia, non-REM sleep, restless leg symptoms and IBS symptoms
